Overview

Festo unveiled the AquaJellies at Hannover Messe in 2008 as artificial jellyfish that glide through a tank using adaptive tentacles. Each unit decides on its own what to do next based on its charge state, orientation and proximity to its neighbours, so group behaviour emerges without central control. The later AquaJellies 2.0 added improved communications and real-time diagnostics on a smartphone (battery, temperature, power draw, depth and heading).
