Ready-built coding robots
These robots work out of the box and grow with the child, from drag-and-drop blocks to typed Python.

Arduino Alvik
Price $140Ages 8+Ships Free over $50
Arduino's own classroom robot, a small three-wheeled car with a distance sensor that sees in an 8 × 8 grid, color and line sensors, and touch buttons. It codes in blocks, MicroPython or Arduino C++. Ports for extra sensors and LEGO Technic mounts leave plenty of room to add on.
Good to know. The rechargeable battery is included and runs over 8 hours. Arduino's US store ships free within the contiguous US but doesn't state a delivery time.

mBot2
Price $149.99Ages 6+Ships From US warehouses
An aluminum robot car with a color screen, microphone, motion sensors and motors that measure how far they turn. It is one of the most common robots in school coding classes. Kids start with blocks in Makeblock's mBlock editor and switch to Python in the same program.
Good to know. The battery is built in and lasts about 5 hours. Makeblock's store had it at $149.99, down from $177.99.

Sphero BOLT
Price $179Ages 8+Ships From the US
A clear, waterproof robot ball with a grid of LED lights inside, a compass and a light sensor. Several BOLTs can sense each other and play games together. It codes by drawing paths, with blocks, or in JavaScript and Python, and a large free lesson library comes with it.
Good to know. It needs a phone, tablet or computer. The newer BOLT+ swaps the LED grid for a color screen and costs $199. Sphero's store sells both.
Build-it-yourself kits
These come as parts, so building the robot is part of the gift. An adult may need to help the first time.

ELECFREAKS Cutebot
For makersPrice $29.90Ages 9+Ships Prime, next day
A palm-sized robot car with headlights, a distance sensor and line sensors that a BBC micro:bit plugs into. It arrives nearly assembled. Kids code it in a web browser with blocks, JavaScript or Python.
Good to know. The micro:bit and 3 AAA batteries are not included. Adding a micro:bit brings the total to about $50. Amazon sells it from ELECFREAKS' own store.

ELEGOO Smart Robot Car V4.0
For makersPrice $79.99Ages 8+Ships Prime, same day
A four-wheel Arduino car built from modules with plug-in cables, so no soldering is needed. Once built, it follows lines, avoids obstacles and streams live video to a phone from its camera. It is a first step into Arduino C programming.
Good to know. The battery pack and camera are included, and the battery charges over USB. The Amazon listing calls it a gift for ages 12 and up, so younger kids will need help with the code.
