Overview

The simplest and cheapest robot pet for an older relative, with nothing to set up beyond batteries.

Joy for All Companion Pets are battery-powered robotic cats and puppies made for older adults, including people with dementia who can no longer keep a live pet. Hasbro launched the cat in December 2015 and the pup in 2016. In 2018 the former Joy for All team bought the brand from Hasbro and formed Ageless Innovation in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. New York State's aging office has handed out 31,500 of the pets since 2018, and it says the program has spread to over 30 states.

The cat purrs with a vibrating motor (VibraPurr), meows, nuzzles and rolls over when stroked or hugged. The pup barks back when spoken to (BarkBack), turns toward voices, wags and has a heartbeat that can be felt on its back. Both run on four C batteries, with nothing to charge or pair. A cardinal or bluebird Walker Squawker clips onto a walker and sings a reminder when the walker is left behind. The pets do not walk around or hold conversations, and they ship only within the US.
