Overview

The default two-finger gripper on research cobots, with an official ROS 2 driver, MuJoCo and Isaac models, and a price near $6,000.

The 2F-85 is Robotiq's two-finger adaptive gripper with an 85 mm stroke, sold as plug-and-play kits for UR, Kinova, Franka and other cobots. It is a common gripper in robot-learning labs. The DROID dataset was collected at 18 labs on Franka Panda arms fitted with a 2F-85. The sibling 2F-140 opens to 140 mm and trades grip force (10–125 N) and payload (2.5 kg) for reach. Robotiq traces both to a launch around 2012 (estimate), with a redesign in 2015. A new generation in November 2018 tied the grippers to UR's safety function.

Each finger has two phalanxes driven by one motor through linkages. The fingers are underactuated, meaning they have fewer motors than joints, so they wrap around odd shapes or pinch in parallel. Grip force is set by capping motor current, and object detection comes from the motor's position and current. Control runs over Modbus RTU on RS-485, and up to four grippers can share one UR arm. Robotiq's Wrist Camera mounts with the 2F gripper without an extra cable. In 2026 Robotiq released an open-source C++ SDK, official ROS 2 packages that replace PickNik's community driver, an MCP server and a Newton-ready Isaac Sim asset. The grippers are rated IP40.
