Overview

A fast, heavy-duty quadruped from Zhejiang University's Center for X-Mechanics (XMECH), built with the School of Aeronautics and Astronautics and the ZJU-Hangzhou Global Scientific and Technological Innovation Center. It holds the Guinness World Record for the fastest 100 m by a quadrupedal robot, 16.33 s, set at a test track in Hangzhou on May 27, 2025. That works out to an average of about 6.1 m/s (estimate), and it beat KAIST's Hound robot, whose 19.87 s had stood since 2023. The team says White Rhino can carry up to 100 kg, a rare mix of speed and load. A forward-design tool tuned its geometry, motors and gearing before it was built. It has a silver alloy frame, ran on sand and mud as well as the track, and took three years to develop.

The team pairs it with its sprint-focused stablemate Black Panther 2.0, which stands for agility while White Rhino stands for strength. Black Panther 2.0 has since run 100 m in as little as 11.67 s in the team's own tests. Those runs were never certified, so White Rhino still holds the official record. No weight, size, sensors or top speed have been published. It matters mainly as a speed and payload benchmark. Apollo, an inspection robot from Mirror Me, the maker of the consumer Black Panther X, is said to carry its design toward market.
