Overview

A record-chasing sprint quadruped from Zhejiang University's Center for X-Mechanics (XMECH) and Mirror Me, a Shanghai startup founded in May 2024 by ZJU professor Hongtao Wang and researcher Yongbin Jin. It was revealed as Black Panther 2.0 in January 2025. Mirror Me calls it Black Panther II, a CCTV show called it Black Panther 2.2 and the team's papers call it BP2. Springs at the knees, carbon-fiber shins inspired by jerboas and a gait built on Huygens' coupled-pendulum principle let a 36 kg robot reach sprint speeds. It follows a 10 kg Black Panther that ran 5 m/s in a 2022 Nature Machine Intelligence paper.

The early "100 m in under 10 seconds" headlines were an extrapolation from treadmill speed, not a measured run. In January 2025 it held about 10 m/s on a lab treadmill, with 10.4 m/s shown in a video. On July 6, 2025 it hit 10.3 m/s on a treadmill in Wuhan. The same day it ran 100 m on a track in 13.17 s from a standing start, peaking at 9.7 m/s. It later raced sprinter Noah Lyles for a MrBeast video and finished 100 m in 12.2 s. The team's September 2026 papers report 13.2 m/s on a treadmill, 11.65 m/s outdoors on concrete and a best 100 m of 11.67 s. The treadmill figure passes the 12.6 m/s record that Boston Dynamics' Cheetah set in 2012, though none of these runs is a certified record. The Guinness 100 m title belongs to its stablemate White Rhino at 16.33 s. Mirror Me's consumer Black Panther X is a separate 4 m/s kit it calls the legacy of this line, the closest thing to Black Panther 2.0 that anyone can buy.
